Tooro Kingdom has flagged off 60 students to pursue higher education at Uganda Pentecostal University (UPU) under a full scholarship programme aimed at expanding access to university education and empowering young people across the Kingdom.

The students were flagged off on today afternoon during a ceremony held at the Tooro Kingdom Chambers in Mucwa, Fort Portal City. The ceremony was presided over by the Deputy Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom, Rt. Hon. Harriet Nyakake Abwooli, who represented the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki.

Under the scholarship arrangement, the beneficiaries will have their tuition fees fully covered and will only be required to the functional fee. The students have been admitted to persue degree, diploma and certificate programmes for the August 2026 intake, with opportunities available under both full-time and weekend study programmes.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Rt. Hon. Nyakake congratulated the students on receiving the scholarship opportunity and urged them to make the most of the chance by remaining focused, disciplined and committed to their studies.

She encouraged the students to uphold high standards of conduct and to become good ambassadors of both Tooro Kingdom and Uganda Pentecostal University.

“This opportunity comes with responsibility. Remain disciplined, work hard and stay focused on your academic goals so that you can positively contribute to the development of your families, Tooro Kingdom and Uganda,” she urged.

The Deputy Minister for Education in Tooro Kingdom, Owek. Ronald Mutegeki Araali, also challenged the students to maintain discipline throughout their academic journey.

Owek. Mutegeki cautioned the beneficiaries against alcoholism and gambling, urging them instead to concentrate on their education, maintain decent standards of dressing and conduct, and make responsible choices that will contribute to a successful future.

Representing the Vice Chancellor of Uganda Pentecostal University, Prof. Pelucy Ntambirweki, the University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr. Joshua Mugenyi, commended the partnership between UPU and Tooro Kingdom.

Dr. Mugenyi described the scholarship initiative as part of UPU’s commitment to giving back to the Kingdom and creating greater opportunities for young people to access higher education.

He expressed appreciation to His Majesty Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV for his continued commitment to the education and development of his subjects and for championing educational opportunities within Tooro Kingdom and beyond.
